《湖北日报》创刊于1949年7月1日，是中共湖北省委的机关报。出版10天后，遵照中共中央华中局把工作重点放在新解放区农村的指示，8月5日改为《湖北农民》报。1950年6月1日起，经中共湖北省委决定，又改出《湖北日报》。1951年7 月1日，新创办《湖北农民报》，两报并存。《湖北农民报》于1953年4月28日停刊。1963年元旦开始出版的《湖北日报农村版》，于“文化大革命”开始后被迫停刊。 《湖北日报》主要面向全省，及时宣传报道本省和全国工农业生产建设的发展形势，对各条战线涌现出来的许多著名英雄模范人物作了突出生动的宣传。
